Self-protection Mechanism
Gas supply-free: The flux core contains gasifier (such as carbonate), which decomposes during welding to produce CO₂ and other gases to isolate the air and replace the external gas cylinder.
Flue core components: The metal outer skin wraps the slag-forming agent/deoxidizer/alloy powder, which simultaneously realizes molten pool protection, impurity removal and performance enhancement.
Core Advantages
1. Operation convenience
Flexible mobility: No need to carry gas cylinders, suitable for field/high-altitude operations.
Simplified equipment: Compatible with basic gasless two-shield welding machines (only current adjustment is required).
2. Process performance
Arc stability: The flux core arc stabilizer reduces spatter and the weld is flat and smooth.
All-position welding: Supports vertical welding, overhead welding and other tricky angle operations.
Enhanced crack resistance: The deoxidizer effectively suppresses pores and cracks.
3. Economical
Cost saving: Save gas procurement/transportation costs (accounting for 30%+ of traditional welding costs).
Efficiency improvement: The deposition speed is 20%~30% higher than that of solid welding wire, shortening the construction period.
Typical Application Scenarios
Field:
Light industry maintenance
Steel structure engineering
Heavy machinery
Emergency construction
Applicable Workpieces:
Thin plate (≤5mm) splicing and repairing
Bridge frame, building truss
Crane arm, mining equipment structure
Field pipeline repair, temporary bracket welding
Applicable Materials
Low carbon steel, galvanized sheet
Q235B low alloy steel
16Mn series high strength steel
Ordinary carbon steel
Selection Tips:
Thin plate operation: Φ0.8mm fine wire is preferred (reduce the risk of burn-through).
High-strength steel welding: Match E71T-11 model (add nickel-molybdenum alloy to improve toughness).
Limitations And Responses
Environmental sensitivity
Wind protection requirements: When the wind speed is greater than 2m/s, the protective gas is easy to dissipate, and a wind shelter needs to be set up.
Smoke control: The combustion smoke of the flux core is large, so ventilation needs to be strengthened or a gas mask needs to be worn.
Post-processing
Weld slag cleaning: The surface of the weld is covered with a thin slag layer, which needs to be cleaned twice with a wire brush.
Compared with traditional solid welding wire
Gasless flux-cored welding wire
Protection method: self-generated gas + slag double protection
Overall cost: reduced by more than 30% (saving gas cylinder costs)
Applicable scenarios: outdoor/mobile scenarios have significant advantages
Solid welding wire + gas protection
Protection method: single external gas protection
Overall cost: high (gas + equipment maintenance)
Applicable scenarios: better indoor stable environment
Note: For key structures with weld strength requirements of >500MPa, solid welding wire + mixed gas solution is still recommended.
